Sensaway 2 on laptop, tablet and phone: 2D data-centre floor plan, SNMP device cards and the mobile site hierarchy.

Sensaway was Birtech’s first software product for monitoring environments and energy, on the web and on the phone.

I designed it end to end from a blank page and built its front end. Over six years it grew from $100K to $2M in revenue, passed a thousand users and scored 90% satisfaction in an IPSOS survey.

Major versions stopped around 2020, but Sensaway never switched off: it still runs today, alongside the next generation that started life in 2019 as “Sensaway 3” and went live as Noctua in 2024.

Device cards, a live 2D plan of the data centre, a single-line electrical diagram, a drag-and-drop room builder and an alarm editor that puts warning, alarm and critical bands on one bar. The gauge study is where the sensor-state colours were fixed.

The native app for iOS and Android: login by IP, the site hierarchy with alarm counts, device and sensor detail, and camera feeds. In spring 2020 it was promoted for keeping an eye on the workplace from home.

Next generation: “Sensaway 3”

A ground-up redesign in 2020–21: a new icon sidebar, a violet accent, 3D site views, asset detail with the energy line from grid to rack, and a new mobile app. This is the generation that became Noctua.

Sensaway 3 Enterprise login with LDAP, licence handling and a 3D site carousel.
Asset detail: cabinet doors, temperatures, PDU load gauges and the energy line from grid to rack.

Numeric watch: each sensor as a gauge plus a trend coloured by threshold.
